Taisho Sugo (菅生 大将Sugō Taishō, born February 21, 1993), better known by his stage name Masaki Suda (菅田 将暉Suda Masaki), is a Japanese actor and singer from Osaka Prefecture. He made his acting debut at the age of 16 in the television series Kamen Rider W as the right side of Kamen Rider W, Philip.^[1][2] He is the youngest to become leading actor in Kamen Rider series and at the age of 25, he has become the youngest actor to win Best Actor Award at Japan Academy Prize. Suda later debuted as singer in 2017 with his big hit song 「見たこともない景色」 (Mita koto mo nai keshiki).

Career[edit]

2009-2011: Beginning of career[edit]

Suda was first scouted when he was in middle school but turned down the offer since he was not interested in the entertainment industry back then. It was later that he watched Gokusen and became interested, participating in audition contests during 2008 and becoming one of the finalists for both the Amuse 30th anniversary audition and the 21st JUNON SUPERBOY CONTEST. He received offers from many agencies before deciding to sign with Topcoat, under the stage name “Suda Masaki”. He auditioned for the first time for the long-running Tokusatsu series Kamen Rider and played the role of “Philip”, the left side of Kamen Rider W, becoming the 11th HeiseiKamen Rider. The 16-year-old Suda had to move from Osaka to Tokyo, where he lived alone, in order to film. Suda said in interviews that he was thankful that he had a kind senior, Kiriyama Renn (playing Shotaro Hidari), who taught him everything from Tokyo dialect to fashion, and giving him clothes and making dinner for him. The role was Suda’s breakout performance and led the young actor to a number of movies and TV dramas such as Veterinarian Dolittle starring Oguri Shun, You Taught Me All the Precious Things starring Miura Haruma, and Runaway: Aisuru Kimi no Tame ni starring Hayato Ichihara.

2012-2014: Challenges and The Changes[edit]

In 2012, Suda tried to break out from beautiful-imaged roles by taking part in many different projects. He won the audition for Cannes Film Festival award-winning director's, Aoyama Shinji’s, new movie The Backwater which is based on Shinya Tanaka’s Akutagawa Prize winning novel. During the filming, he met many difficulties and he often cried. His senior actor, Oguri Shun, and director Aoyama Shinji are one of those who gave him advices at the time so he appreciated them. He also mentioned on several occasions that Aoyama Shinji is the director that changed his way of thinking for acting and everything started from then.

In 2013, Suda continued to challenge himself with the role of the heroine's silly and mischievous brother in Nakuna, Hara-chan and the role of a smart but sarcastic bully, Tsuchiya Masamitsu, in a school drama 35-sai no Koukousei starring Ryoko Yonekura. His character, Masamitsu, was widely hated and loved by many as a result of his powerful acting, stunning the audience throughout the drama. Not so long after the drama ended, he started filming The Light Shines Only There as a problematic child with a pure heart which later brought him number of awards. His starring movies The Backwater and Daily Lives of High School Boys were released in September and October in order. He was later casted as a delinquent teenager in sequel movie Ushijima the Loan Shark Part 2 and in NHK Asadora(morning drama) Gochisousan as the Heroine's eldest son Taisuke.

In 2014, he won Newcomer award at 37th Japan Academy Prize for his performance in The Backwater. The AsadoraGochisousan was a big hit. His character as a reliable eldest son was loved by the audience. He won 3 awards for his performance in Ushijima the Loan Shark Part 2 and 6 awards from 24th Japanese Movie Critics Awards and others for his performance in The Light Shines Only There. He also did a great performance in late night drama Shinigami-kun as the main antagonist Akuma which later won him 2 Best Supporting Actor Awards. Later that year, he starred in Princess Jellyfish as a cross-dressing guy. His performance was well-received winning 3 awards and his beautiful face and slender body, which he took effort to put his weight off, were also praised by many.

2015-2017: Rising Popularity, Debut as a Singer[edit]

In 2015, Suda starred in the hit live-action movie Assassination Classroom as the original manga's popular character Akabane Karma. He got to show his singing for a little in NHK drama Chanpon Tabetaka based on real life story of hit 70s-80s singer Sada Masashi. Suda's role as Masashi Sano is Sada Masashi in his younger days. He started learning how to play guitar in preparation for this role. His starring late night politic-comedy drama Tamiō was also a success, having its special episodes after the show ended. Suda also received Best Actor Award for his performance in Tamiō. He later became a part of au KDDI popular commercial movie auSantaro series. His performance as Oni-chan（鬼ちゃん）was loved by people all over the country. He also has many other commercial offers coming as well as offers for movies and dramas.

In 2016, he made a record of having 9 movies and 4 dramas in 1 year. He became one of GQ Magazine's Men of the Year 2016.^[3] His performance as double role in Pink and Gray was praised by many, bringing him 2 Best Supporting Actor Awards and his performance in Destruction Babies, releasing in the same year, brought him another 2 more Best Supporting Actor Awards. He also landed a role in Getsuku music drama Love Song starring Masaharu Fukuyama and NTV hit drama Pretty Proofreader starring Satomi Ishihara. His role as silly but sincere Soraichi in Love Song and sweet heroine’s love-at-first-sight Yukito-kun in Pretty Proofreader were well-loved by audiences. He also starred in Death Note sequel movie Death Note: Light Up the New World as the main antagonist and in a romance movie Oboreru Knife as the main protagonist. Suda got to show his singing again in the based on Naoki Prize awarded novel movie Nanimono as he played a university student who is also a rock band singer. In December, Suda lent his singing voice to a song cheering for Japan national football team in auSantaro series commercial movie. His identity was kept a secret until much later and everyone was surprised that he could sing that well. It was then that a record company approached him to make his debut as a singer.^[4][5][6] The song 'Mita Koto mo Nai Keshiki' was well-received and later became his debut song.

In 2017, he starred in a film Kiseki: Sobito of that day based on the true story of Japan famous boy group Greeeen. Together with other casts, Suda sang new version of Greeeen’s songs for the movie. They released CD in the name Green Boys. On March 22, Masaki Suda announce his debut as a solo singer with his first single 'Mita Koto mo Nai Keshiki' (見たこともない景色, lit. 'The scenery that I have never seen before'). Its digital track was released in April and the single’s CD was released on July 6, 2017 together with Suda’s self-composed track^[5][7]. The single received Gold Certification for its popularity.

2017 proved to be a fruitful year for Suda. His starring movie Teiichi: Battle of Supreme High was commercially successful, reaching over 1 billion yen in box office sales. The live-action movie Gintama , in which he took part, was a major hit, reaching over 4 billion yen in box office sales and becoming one of that year's highest-grossing movies. He received a personal offer from the renowned singer-songwriter, Kenshi Yonezu, to sing with him for the song Haiiro to Ao (Grey and Blue). The song received Platinum Certification and a Best Collaboration Award. Its MV has also surpassed 100 million views on Youtube. The movie Aa, Koya (Ah, Wilderness), in which he starred, was highly praised and garnered 8 Best Actor Awards including from the 41st Japan Academy Prize and the 91st Kinema Junpo Award.

2018-Present: Winning Awards and Aiming to do Meaningful Projects[edit]

In 2018, he won 5 Best Leading Actor Awards and also a Popularity Award. Together with Huwie, he wrote the song Sayonara Elegy for his close friend's, Kento Yamazaki's starring drama, Todome no Kiss. The song became popular, being covered by many people all over the country and received Platinum Certification for its sales. He also starred in the drama as a mysterious musician. His performance was well-received and also won an award. In April, his romantic comedy live-action movie, My Little Monster was released. His role as Yoshida Haru who was perceived as a trouble maker at first but actually is innocent and warmhearted guy makes the audience fall for him as many said he played out the role Haru very well. Later this year, he starred in late night drama 'dele'. His performance as a young man with a kind heart was well-received by audiences and highly praised by critics, bringing him several awards.

In 2019, Suda led the NTV winter drama, Mr. Hiiragi’s Homeroom (３年Ａ組, lit. “3 nen A gumi”) which became a big hit, its final episode reaching 15.4% in terms of television ratings.^[8] The drama was praised for its meaningful and socially relevant commentary. On March 26, it was announced that Suda will be voice actor of DC comics hero Shazam in the Japanese dubbed version of the movie Shazam!^[9] On March 28, it was announced that he would release a new song titled “Machigai Sagashi”(まちがいさがし) composed and produced by Kenshi Yonezu whom he has worked with before. The song is said to have meaningful and delicate lyrics.^[10]

Personal Life[edit]

Suda Masaki is the oldest of three brothers born in Osaka. As a child, he played soccer and learned to play the piano and dance. He is also very family orientated and very kind to his brothers. They said he never got angry whatever they do and three of them usually do everything together when they were young. Even when he becomes famous and busy, he still makes time to meet his family and hang out with his brothers once in a while. Compared to some of his on-screen personalities, Suda is, in fact, a very conscientious person, calm and composed, soft-spoken and the type to think about things theoretically and understand. He is known to be kind and also have a fun-loving side that makes people like to be around him.

He is close friends with Kento Yamazaki^[11][12], Taiga and Fumi Nikaido.^{[13][circular reference]} When asked if he was dating Nikaido,^[14] he denied the report and said that they were just friends, mentioning in a Television program that Nikaido is like a family member. In the music industry, he is close to Ishizaki Huwie and Aimyon. The three often hang out together.^[15][16] Suda is also known to have good friendship with Kenshi Yonezu.
